Description:
The Heijoshin Karate Dojo teaches traditional Goju Ryu Karate and is a member of the Japan Karate Federation Goju Kai under the Seiwa Kai organization. The name Heijoshin literally means "everyday spirit", implying that what the student learns in the Dojo transfers directly into their everyday life. Goju Ryu, literally "the way of hard and soft" is one of the four main styles of Japanese/Okinawan karate and is known and respected throughout the world.
The Dojo is a place of experiential learning. The body and mind will learn many lessons through training. It is important to retain the concept of "beginner's mind" to remain open to the process. The knowledge is both empirical and experiential and all start at the bottom. Men and women do equally well in our art and are treated equally. It is important to leave the ego at the door upon bowing into the Dojo.
There is a level of commitment and seriousness that defines the study of any martial art. Every aspect of your training should be approached with mature consideration. The traditional martial arts, while teaching you to effectively defend yourself, are as concerned with the quality of your character as with the power of your techniques. Interestingly, the two seem to go hand-in-hand. With power we learn respect and responsibility so we do not misuse that power. Being tough is one thing; being tough and having good character is a benefit to society.
Welcome to our website and thank you for your interest. Please feel free to observe a class or schedule an appointment to discuss your training goals and how we might help you achieve them. I hope you will enjoy karate training for many years, and that your experience will be as rewarding as my own.

Sydney Iaido Club |
Last Update: 2009/5/4 9:56 |
Description:
Welcome to the Sydney Iaido Club! We are based in Seven Hills, New South Wales, where we practise Seitei Iaido (ZNKR) and Kendo. We are affiliated with the NSW Kendo Association, and the Australian Kendo Renmei. Telephone Mobile: 0419 324 102
Established in 1976 by Doug Milton, we are the oldest Iaido club in New South Wales. In 1990, Dr Yahiko Kadono Sensei 'adopted' the Sydney Iaido Club, and oversaw the formation of the Blue Leaf Dojo and the commencement of Ko-ryu training. Full details of our club history can be found on the "Club History" page.
At present, we have about 17 Iaidoka and about 7 Kendoka. Our chief Iaido instructor is Dean Hawthorn Sensei, who is ranked 5th Dan. Our club has four Nidan members, and three Shodan members. Full information about all our club members can be found on the "About Us" page.
Iaido is the art of Japanese Swordsmanship, and its beginnings date back to the Samurai period in Japan, where there were many different schools or ryu. Its modern form dates back to the late 1960's, when the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei in Japan put together seven kata, in what was called Seitei Iaido. In 1981, three forms were added, and then a further two in 2000 to bring the total up to twelve. Each of the Iaido kata is composed of 4 general movements: (1) Nukitsuke, or drawing of the sword, (2) Kiritsuke, or cutting movements, (3) Chiburi, or removing the blood from the sword, and (4) Noto, returning the sword to its saya or scabbard. More information about Iaido and Kendo can be found in the "Iaido and Kendo" page
